Book Talk Tuesday: Enemy Pie

I'm linking up with Deanna Jump for Book Talk Tuesday!

The book I want to share with you guys is...

It should have been the perfect summer with his sister away and a new tree house, but it wasn't turning out to be perfect at all.
Jeremy Ross was the reason it was not perfect!

He laughed at him during baseball and didn't invite him over for the trampoline party...

Jeremy Ross becomes the first and only person on his enemy list in his tree house!

Luckily, his dad seems to know how to get rid of his enemy!!  He begins by making an enemy pie.

Jeremy and him ride bikes, play basketball and even hang out in his tree house.

However, he becomes scared when his dad offers him the enemy pie.

It turns out, the 'recipe' for getting rid of your enemy is to treat them like a friend!

I think this story is perfect for any age!  I love to read this book during our friends unit.
It's the perfect message on how to treat a bully or someone who doesn't seem to like you.

And....
In case you didn't know, you can watch Enemy Pie on Storyline Online!

Be sure to check out the other awesome books linked up over at Deanna's blog!

Back to School Lunchbox Linky!!!

How many times do you race around the kitchen in a panic trying to throw something together that can resemble a lunch???

I definitely remember those days...

Well, here are a few items you can throw together really quickly to make a fabulous lunch!!!

My daughter and I both LOVE Hummus!  These are perfect to have as a snack or with your lunch.

Cheese bars or cheese sticks are easy to grab and yummy as well!
(I love to eat these with red grapes!)

Occasionally, I would even run out the door without breakfast... This is no bueno if you have to constantly be moving all day!
You need to fuel yourself in the morning, and yes that means something other than coffee!

I love to add some fresh fruit to my lunch and Sara always appreciates it when I put it in her lunch on Mother's Day Out days.

You can also make a yummy turkey avocado sandwich, egg salad or even just an egg sandwich.

These are perfect for kids of any age!  It's nice to have things that are quick and easy to pack (keep these stocked in your pantry).

You're a teacher for goodness sake, take a desert every now and then!  I don't know about you, but Nutella makes my heart happy (not my hips).

Thinking of kids again..  Be sure to keep simple snacks on hand.  These will come in handy after school when they are already ready for dinner!

I'd love to see what you bring to school for lunch or what you pack for your kiddos!  Link up below!

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!!

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is one of my all time favorite children's books!!  It's bright, colorful, catchy & perfect for the beginning of the school year.  I especially like to use it as a introduction to the entire alphabet, before we begin focusing on one letter at a time.

Here are some of the activities I did with my kinder kids during this unit in August:

Letter Tracing Practice

Interactive Chicka Chicka Chart
( I later created a flipchart and used my Promethean Board.)

Fill in the missing letters (You might want to display an alphabet chart for this activity.)

Palm Tree Pattern or Sorting Center/Activity

 Boom Boom Bingo Dotter
(One page is for 2 dice and one page is for 1 dice. You can determine what your class needs.)

Create your own word or letter find.
(Perfect for morning work or an independent activity.)

A simple, yet important, counting printable.

There are 5 math journal prompts.

An adorable art activity!

We did an experiment with a coconut & recorded our observations in our science journals. #welovescience

These activities, plus so many more, are included in my CCBB unit.

As you can see... SJ also has a LOVE for books, but especially Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!!!!

5 Tips to Keep Kinders busy!

The first few weeks of school can be awful stressful...  But some of the best advice I can give you is to keep those Kinders busy!

Here are 5 tips to help you keep them busy:

One of the first things I did each day after turning on my computer was to open my Movement Songs flipchart.  I wanted it to be open each day so I could have easy access to it if my little ones were getting fidgety.  I created a flip chart by hyper linking all the songs from you tube.  You can also do this in ppt.

If you don't have a smart board, keep a CD in your computer or have your iTunes open for easy access.

Do your kids use book boxes???

Teach them to quietly grab their book box and read silently when they finish their work early.  This will prevent them from distracting their neighbors at their desks.

Another option might be to pick an extra activity such as the listening center or silently re-tell the book of the week.  Our library would have some retelling puppets that I tried to grab.

Laminate (or stick in page protectors) a stack of alphabet pages.  Keep some dry erase markers handy.  If you finish a lesson early or have some extra time, pass out the markers and laminated pages for some handwriting and fine motor practice.

You can snag this one free by clicking the picture!

Make sure to create interactive anchor charts or flipcharts for your students.  We all know at this age, they can only sit for so long...

But- keep them engaged with charts and activities they can participate in!  They will be more likely to pay better attention to you and their peers if you give them the chance to be the teacher!

Do you have any tips to share on keeping kinders busy???
