Three Little Pigs- NEW UNIT!

Obviously, since I am a teacher I LOVE to read to my daughter and have a million children's books.  One of our current favorites to read is The Three Little Pigs by James Marshall.  There are so many different versions, but this has always been my go to when reading to my kinder kiddos.

I created a sweet little unit that can be used both in the classroom and home school setting.

I think this cute little pig would make an adorable bulletin board display.. just saying.

There is a pig and wolf character Analysis (bubble maps). I always LOVED using these with my kinder kids because it helped them write sentences easier and eventually a paragraph.

This unit touches on soooo many standards!!!! Characters, Setting, Re-telling, etc...

I usually try to do this unit during P week. So, as you can see.. I included a few letter P activities.

There are also 5 Math Journal Prompts. If you have been following me for any length of time, you know I love Math & Science Journals!!!

A Fun re-telling craft activity!

I used hay, toothpicks and sandpaper. This activity would be a great way to review at the end of the week.  They can also practice re-telling the story by using the characters.

And last but not least--- you know I had to include a Science experiment or two. This one is my fav! Take your blow dryer to school and see if the wind will blow some ordinary classroom objects. The kids will LOVE it!!!

Solid's Liquids and Gases.. Oh My!

 I LOVE teaching Science!  It has to be one of my favorite subjects!!!  There is so much excitement when students discover, observe and explore during a science experiment.

I always teach my "It Matters!" unit during our Snowman week.  I like to incorporate science into as many subject areas as possible.  Some themes are easier to do than others.. For example with snow, you can display changes in matter- score!

One of the experiments listed in my Matter unit is called: Air takes up space.  Here's what you do:  Fill up a bucket or large bowl of water.  Place a dry paper towel in the bottom of a clear glass cup. Ask the child to push the cup (facing down) to the bottom of the bucket.  Hold it for a few seconds, then ask them to pull it back out.  At this point, I love watching their faces, because they feel like they have just performed a magic trick!  After the experiment is over, we complete our recording sheet. 

Science is so much fun!!!

I also like to show this video after we discuss Matter.  Some students may have a slight understanding of the concept, but this video goes a little more in depth (And, it's FREE).  Click the picture to watch.

Another easy experiment to do with your students is to simply watch an ice cube melt.  The recording sheet used in the picture above is also in my unit.  It might seem simplistic but it will help students understand how matter changes.

Interactive Science Journals

Unfortunately, many schools are pushing Science right out the door and focusing primarily on math and literacy.  While these things are important and the foundation of every child's educational career... ignoring other subject areas is a horrible idea!

If you haven't started this already, it's definitely something to think about for next year.  If your principal tells you there isn't enough time in the day for Science.. you show her your science journals.  They are the perfect way to combine writing, math skills, and so much more with Science!

I just wanted to do a photo dump today so you can see the possibilities!!!!!

A magnetic attraction...

Along with all my other usual Valentine's activities I do this time of year.. I like to do a mini unit on magnets!

Here are a few awesome resources I found that are perfect to use when teaching about magnets to little learners.

First of all, I just LOVE brainpopjr!!!  There almost always seems to be the perfect little video to go with my lesson (especially science and social studies).  This magnet video helps little ones to better understand the simple concept of a magnet.

Next, you have to allow your students to be hands on.  So, I found this little freebie online to help them conduct an experiment and record their findings!

 And, I don't know about you.. but I love to play fun little videos or songs while my students are working or even to wrap up a lesson.  This one is short and simple, but pretty cute!

And, I had never seen this guy before.. but if you don't have brainpop and want a short, kid-friendly explanation of magnets- this one is pretty good too!

 After conducting an experiment, I always like to do a project or activity where they have free reign.  I found this adorable little project from gingersnapcrafts.  You know the boys would be all over this one!!!

This is also another fun activity to let your kiddos explore magnets.  I like to do this activity with a hypothesis before.  Many of my kiddos would guess wrong.  I loved seeing their shocked little faces!

At the end of every science unit, activity, etc.. We always open up those science journals and do an assessment.  This is included in my Interactive Science Journals for Young Learners.
